Raleigh, May 23rd, 2022 - North Carolina students would benefit from critical budget increases under the Leandro Plan. A new tool shows how new funding can be used to better support students in each district.
Every Child North Carolina is excited to announce the launch of the Leandro Budget Impact data tool which shows how Leandro Plan funding would benefit students, educators, and communities in every public school district.
Each of North Carolina’s school districts will benefit with transformational increases to essential resources such as funding for more teachers, support staff, nurses, counselors, bus drivers, and textbooks. It also dramatically increases funding for early childhood education.
Communities across the state can now view the potential impact of Leandro on their local districts. The online tool provides parents, elected officials, reporters, and advocates an understanding of the district level impact of Leandro. The tool allows users to see Leandro’s impact on individual districts. It also demonstrates how many teachers, counselors, nurses, and other additional positions could be added under the Leandro Plan.
Every Child NC co-Chair and founding member, Letha Muhammad of Education Justice Alliance says “the new tool will give us clear data on the impact of Leandro. We can use this tool to dive down on how this impacts our individual districts. Using this tool will allow us as parents, advocates, community members and elected officials to see what the impact would be if Leandro was fully funded. Students who face barriers to learning, such as English language learners, rural students, students from households with low-incomes, students with disabilities, and students who face racial discrimination, will realize so many tangible benefits with Leandro.”
Muhammed continued “part of the challenge is that when you hear about the billions of Leandro dollars that could be given, it's hard to conceptualize what that would mean for our students and our schools. This impact tool allows us to actually see the material impact on essential supports and services for students and resources for staff."
According to Elaine Zukerman, of the North Carolina Early Education Coalition "What the data tool shows us is how the Leandro Plan recognizes the urgent need to ensure that all children - regardless of race, family income, or zip code - have access to a sound, basic education beginning in early childhood. The plan will help North Carolina deliver on the promise of giving every child the opportunity to grow, learn, and succeed. Simply put, it is an investment we can’t afford not to make."
Every Child has created information graphics using the Leandro Budget Impact data tool that reflect the impact in various school districts across the state.
The state constitution guarantees that all North Carolina children have access to a sound, basic education. However, since the Leandro v. State of North Carolina case was filed in 1994, the courts have consistently found the state failing short of these minimum standards.
Every Child NC is a community-led, statewide coalition of organizations, parents, teachers, and students who advocate for every child’s constitutional right to a sound, basic education.
We have local experts and education advocates across the state available to talk about the impact of Leandro on their home communities.
