North Carolina - Organizers of the Rally for Every Child have announced the speakers list for the August 27th event. With the Leandro case heading into final arguments at the State Supreme Court, the statewide coalition Every Child NC is continuing to grow their movement for education equity in North Carolina.
Robeson County’s Angus Thompson, a retired public defender, has been an outspoken advocate for the values of the Leandro Plan since 1994. Thompson, who will be one of the featured speakers, says “The law is sacred. It’s a constitutional issue. I certainly hope that we will prevail. I’m optimistic. On the 31st they will be hearing the case. The real political solution is through coalition politics and collaboration and finding allies. Everybody has skin in this game.”
Additional speakers include:
Tamika Walker Kelly, President of the North Carolina Association of Educators, notes: “The Leandro Plan is all about giving our students the education they are owed. That starts with supporting a diverse and highly-qualified teaching force. But it also means investing in early education programs that allow students to enter school on equal footing, providing the resources needed to allow all students to flourish, and making sure our high school students graduate with clear pathways to college or a career. These elements are all necessary to provide children a constitutional education.”
Deborah Dicks Maxwell, President of the North Carolina State Conference of Branches of the NAACP, said: “The courts and the constitution are clear that the quality of a child’s education shouldn’t be limited by their zip code. Every child in this state is owed the right to go to a good school no matter where they live. Full funding of the Leandro Plan is the way we start to provide our children with the equitable opportunities they deserve.”
Leaders representing public education and school resource equity will be sharing remarks. These organizations could include Education Justice Alliance, North Carolina Association of Educators, the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, Advance Carolina, ISLA, NC Justice Center, and allies statewide.
