As children return to school across our state, Leandro offers a blueprint to finally meet our students’ constitutional rights to a sound basic education.
Every Child NC is hopeful that our students will get the resources necessary to thrive as the North Carolina Supreme Court hears the Leandro case.
In front of the court is an opportunity for all of our students, but particularly those who have been most harmed by our state’s underfunding such as those facing racial discrimination, English language learners, rural students, students from households with low incomes, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ students, to be fully supported.
We know that the legislature has failed to meet its obligation to the public schools of North Carolina, and it is time for the Supreme Court to act. What we need now is the delivery of a remedy to finally provide our students with the quality education they are owed. Today, as oral arguments concluded, we believe that the students of North Carolina are one step closer to seeing that remedy delivered.
As we have worked across the state, we have heard over and over that people love their public schools, but they know that not all children are getting a fair shot. We look forward to the Court ordering funding of the Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan.
